HOW DOES SCOLIOSIS PROGRESS?

Scoliosis has a progressive nature which makes treatment a time sensitive matter.

During childhood, scoliosis typically progresses as the child’s body is growing. Scoliosis most often gets discovered during a growth spurt. There are many various physiological, genetic, and environmental factors involved in the development of scoliosis. Due to the multifactorial nature of scoliosis, it is very difficult to predict how fast it will progress and what is the likelihood of progression to the necessity of surgical treatment.

Identifying Scoliosis early is the key to successful prevention of undesirable progression.

During adulthood scoliosis may progress at variable rates due to the degenerative changes in the spine and in muscular – skeletal system because of the aging process. The decrease in bone density such as osteopenia and osteoporosis and decrease in muscle strength, postural stamina and balance can cause scoliosis progression in adulthood. Additionally, it is known that bigger curves tend to progress faster during adult life, while smaller curve have better chance to remain stable.

Physical therapy treatment for adults with scoliosis helps to decrease pain, improve posture, restore body symmetry, improve respiration, improve balance, and improve overall function.

Timely detection and treatment is the key to reach successful outcomes for patients of all ages. Timely response helps to slow down, stop, or even reverse undesirable progression of scoliosis.
