Scoliosis Bracing

Bracing is an important treatment for scoliosis and kyphosis. The brace is prescribed by an orthopedic specialist and it is fabricated by a certified orthotist. The choice of brace depends on the physician’s opinion and the patient’s needs and preferences. The primary goal of bracing is to guide the growth of the spine by restoring spinal alignment and redistributing pressure along the spinal column.

Bracing helps to release asymmetrical tension at the spinal ligaments and joints that is created by scoliosis or kyphosis. Therefore, bracing can be helpful even when growth has slowed down or stopped. Three-dimensional braces aim to redirect breathing to the areas of the lungs that are suppressed by scoliosis.

Bracing in conjunction with physical therapy has been very effective to treat progressive scoliosis. Scoliosis specific exercises strengthen one’s ability to assume and maintain postural corrections independently without help, ensuring that positive treatment results will be maintained after weaning off the brace.

A multidisciplinary team approach is essential when working with a child who is receiving bracing treatment. The team effort is usually coordinated between the orthotist, the doctor, and the physiotherapist to assure that bracing is an effective and positive experience. The therapist has the ability to monitor the brace on a weekly basis to ensure that any issues will be addressed in a timely manner.
